Let me introduce you to one of my pet peeves.  Now, I love techno music.  LOVE it.  It makes me happy, want to dance, and want to have a good time.  It’s my happy place music.  I love all kinds of techno, electronica, stuff like that.  But do you know what I hate?  People that put a beat track behind music that doesn’t belong there.  Case in point, the popular song from Titanic, from what’s her face?  I HATE HATE HATE when they put a beat track behind it and call it techno.

Where did this come from, you say?  Well, a local high school here plays all forms of techno from like 9 at night till 4 in the morning.  Now, I give them all kinds of credit for playing techno at any time, at any hour.  Around here, in Indiana, to say there isn’t a real techno movement here, is an understatement.  So, I’m just glad to hear techno on the air.  They used to do a lunch time thing, too, but went away from that :-(  And, I’d say, about 60% of the time, they play authentic, original, good techno.  That other 40%, is crap.  Like, I Will Survive with a beat behind it, and calls it techno.  FOR SHAME.  Get that crap off the air!!  I’m not sure who I’m more miffed at, the unoriginal bastards who put it together, or the radio station for playing it.  They’re both equally guilty.  Listen, I understand that you really like Random Song A, sung by the Mama’s and the Papa’s.  And yeah, putting a killer beat behind the main lyrics SOUND like a good idea.  Let me tell you how it turns out: Crap.  Utter crap.  Just because it SOUNDS like a good idea, and you have the ability to do so, doesn’t mean you SHOULD.  Just…do something of your own, would ya?  It won’t hurt, and hell, it might even be something good.

You know, I think I’m more miffed at the radio station, because one fool might do a sample of a wacked out song, but it’s the radio station’s fault for playing so many different sampled songs.  I dare not call them covers, as I don’t think that’s fair.  But yes, I hate when techno DJ’s sample songs that really shouldn’t be sampled.  NO, Micheal Bolton does NOT need a kicking drum beat behind him.  So don’t put it there!!  Now, there are some songs that work as a techno-transformed song.  Sarah MacLaughlin had a great one, Silence.  And nearly anything from 80’s synthesizer bands work pretty good, as they’re the parents of techno anyways.  Depeche Mode works.  U2 does NOT.  Oddly enough, Static X can drop some great techno flavored metal.  Jessica Simpson DOES NOT.

And even though some songs convert pretty well, I’d still like them to play those types a ton lot less.  I want to hear original stuff.  I’d kill to hear more DJ Darkzone, or Kernkraft.  Stuff like Darude or Chemical Brothers.  Or, even The Crystal Method.

I went to see The Crystal Method live.  OH. MY. GOD.  That was such a fun show!!  Man, that was a blast!  And I tell you, I’ve never been so exhausted coming from a concert.  I was doing the whole glowstick thing, and I thought my arms were gonna freakin fall off.  If I had the chance to see those dudes again, I’d do it in a heartbeat.  I fully well know and expect to be one of the old farts there.  I don’t care.  Still dig them.  And you should too.  They did songs from Blade: Trinity and Replacement Killers, as well as Spawn.  Their big hit was with Filter, Trip Like I Do.  GREAT song from the Spawn soundtrack.

Wow…I make a stand about the weirdest stuff.

So, I’m posting this at 2:00 in the morning.  I went to a midnight release of Gears of War 2 for the XBox.  Why?  I do not know.  It seemed like the thing to do.  So I tinkered with that for a bit.  Fun stuff.  I think I might get to like that pretty well.  some of the stuff is a bit wonky, but I’m sure that just takes some getting used to.  I’m looking forward to it.  My buddy Jason got his this evening as well, and I saw him tinkering with it.  If nothing else is going on tomorrow, it might be game night for ol’ Jay. :)  If any of you slackers ever get an XBox (looking at you, Matt, Adam…), or would bother to get yours on line (looking at you, Amy & Billy), this is definitely a game I’d like to play online.  Tomorrow night, I’m going to enter my geek Friday entry about the game.  You’ve been forwarned. :)
